Keratoconus: To conquer the cone

Published:February 21, 2022DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clae.2022.101578
Keratoconus is the most common sight threatening non-inflammatory corneal ectasia affecting younger patients. In most cases the condition is bilateral and asymmetrical. At presentation, which is usually initiated due to diminishing best corrected VA, and an otherwise unexplained progression of astigmatic refractive error, primary care optometrists attribute a presumed diagnosis, based largely on the quality of the retinoscopy reflex. As the disease progresses alterations to the corneal profile, resulting in central stromal thinning, and a characteristic inferior corneal conical protrusion, appear. Two excellent review papers appearing almost 10 years apart in CLAE, provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the subject [

]. Between 1998 and 2022 a total of 174 papers which include the word Keratoconus in the title, or as a keyword, have been published in CLAE. Twenty-one papers referring to different aspects of, or associations with, keratoconus, in the title have been published in the last 4 CLAE volumes (2018–2022). Varied and interesting topics covered include keratoconus; corneal endothelial morphology; scleral topography; ocular aberrations; diagnostic procedures; keratoplasty; scleral rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses (CLs); corneal crosslinking; intraocular pressure.
