Singing the unlisted heroes of research

      When reading stories online, it’s easy to be distracted by those “clickbait” links that pop up everywhere, enticing you follow a thread onto some website, which an AI algorithm has selected based on the browsing history of everyone who used that computer in the last year. A recent example, to which I sadly succumbed, had me looking at the Forbes list of the richest people in the world [

To be accurate, the link was not to the actual list itself but to a revelation of names, in true, “hit-parade”, reverse-order fashion, emerging at the infuriating rate of one, per mouse click. As each press of the “NEXT” button reduced my anticipation and increased my exasperation, I began to wonder just who, with an evident wealth in the region of $100 billion, would care about being different from the person next on the list by a paltry $1billion dollars. Before being drowned by email from those suggesting that this sort of thinking is why I will never be on the list, I admit that my own aspirations, like most people, are many dollar orders of magnitude lower than those in this exalted assembly.
