Over the last few years CLAE has dedicated the first issue of the year to being a
themed issue on a relevant and current area related to contact lenses and/ or anterior
eye topics. There has been a call to authors to submit for the themed issue which
would hopefully become a good reference point for up-to-date information. These themed
issues of CLAE have included scleral contact lenses, dry eye and this current issue
is on the topic of myopia control. Over the last 2 years CLAE has seen a rise in papers
related to this growing area of research. It would be fair to say that most of these
papers have been around the topic of orthokeratology, with a renewed interested in
orthokeratology not just as a means of refractive correction but more as a means of
myopia control. In the past CLAE has published papers that explore the effects of
orthokeratology such as the effects on the corneal endothelium [
]. A quick and simple search on PubMed using only the two words ‘Myopia Control’ reveal
an exponential growth in the number of published papers on this subject (Fig. 1) and if the PubMed search is narrowed down to using the keys words ‘Myopia Control
Contact Lenses’ then fewer papers are seen but the same trend can be seen with the
interest starting to increase around 2010 (Fig. 2).
Fig. 1shows the number of peer reviewed papers on the topic of 'Myopia Control' on a PubMed
search.
